Interviews #2Interview #1 What is a typical day like for you? Major? Job? Class?
Go to class during the day (5 different classes). I'm an undeclared major currently, and I work as a CA.
Background/ Home life/ High School?
I have an older brother (didn't go to college), older sister (just graduated from college), and I live with my parents. In my high school there were 4,000 students, 10th through 12th grade. Being from a larger school, it wasn't too much of an adjustment to the amount of people at college.
How do you spend your free time?
Lounging, watching movies, socializing, playing video games. I like to do fun things every moment I can.
Do you think you spend more time socializing than you do studying?
I socialize a lot, my mom tells me to shut up a lot. So I talk a lot. I usually try to start things, but just end up giving up because I'm too distracted by everyone around me and everything that's going on.
How does being a CA affect your daily routine?
Constantly interrupted, and I never know when an incident is going to happen or when I need to address something. I'm constantly on alert. I also have to do desk shifts during the week.
Interview #2 What is a typical day like for you?
I get up, get breakfast, go to class, do work, watch tv, go on the internet, relax, and hang out with people. I usually do homework until I feel tired and go to sleep.
Background/ Home life/ High School?
I live with my parents, younger brother (in college). My high school was about 1,100 students and it was an all guys school. It was pretty rough. I was on swim team, so I got some interaction with girls.
How do you spend your free time?
Basically, I like to hang out, sometimes work out. I watch sports a lot, and I like to play golf and swim. I also like to surf the net a lot.
Do you think you spend more time socializing than studying?
I try to keep a decent balance, but I usually tend to hang out with people more. Sometimes I try to do so work and study, and then my roommate gets me all distracted by tv or talking. I will have to stay up a lot later because I just can't stay focused during the day for work, and then later on I'm so tired I can't focus. And then I don't get enough sleep and skip a class.
Conclusion: From these interviews, I can see how family life may have an affect on why people come to college. Most of the interviewees I talked to came from a two parent household with older siblings. This could have a very heavy influence on their choices. Also I noticed how these students came from rather large high schools, which could influence how comfortable they are to get involved in campus. Both of these students seemed to agree with my findings that academics take the back seat to socializing a lot. They may begin their homework or studying for the night, but always get distracted by people or things that are more entertaining.
